Barnet & District Athletic Club
Club XC Champs Hadley Woods 22 December 2012
Herewith the results of the club cross-country champs. Weather was extremely wet and the conditions difficult over what is normally a hard course, made even more so from the very muddy, soft and wet, waterlogged ground.
Consequently a somewhat reduced turn out especially in the younger age groups. Full results here
Metropolitan League Race 3 Alexandra Palace 15 December 2012
Well done to the Ladies for yesterday's Met League efforts, we are now back at the top of the 3rd division ahead of Newham and Essex Beagles and Shaftesbury's B team. Phillipa. The Men also had solid bunching and are 2nd in Division 3 led home by Alex Horton. Run of the day goes to George Groom who won the U13 Boys race. Full results here

SEAA XC & Inter Counties Claybury 8 December 2012
Hundreds of runners were involved in races round the Claybury course. We had Southern Inter-Counties races from under 13s (where our very own George Groom had an excellent run to win) right up to senior women, all plus Southern Masters Championships, all on the same day. Des Michael, straining in the M50/M60 race, found himself mixed up with a mass of young athletes racing for their finishing funnel. An official bellowed “Hey veteran, you’ve got to do another lap”, (the official could see straight away that Des wasn’t a teenager). Our best individual result was Des who was 4th V60 meanwhile our V40 and V50 teams both came 4th teams as well. Well done veterans. V40 here, V50 here & George's U13 win here
Fraternity & Soriety XC Cups Trent Park 1 December 2012
A stong turn-out from our Ladies saw them comfortably retain the Soriety Cup, whilst the Men dropped to 3rd this time around. The Ladies were led in by Jo Kent in 2nd place, closely followed by Karen Murphy and Nicola Froud in 5th & 6th. The Men being led home by Richard McCormick in 10th. Full results are here.

London XC Champs Parliament Hill 17 November 2012
A pleasant, chilly afternoon with 4 to count, we had a decent Women’s and Men’s showing. It was interesting to watch the races unfold from where I was positioned at the Kenwood end of the course. With Jo comfortably our first woman (an excellent 14th), an interesting tussle ensued between Karen and Nicola, both coming back to full fitness. Helen coming back from Sheffield for us running strongly and Cath P starting slowly but putting in a determined finish. Womens full results here.
Although Will showed his cards early, wily Richard ran his usual calculated race to be our first man. Despite not liking “the country”, Raj came through very strongly as did Alex after a nervous first half. Stalwart performances from the likes of James and Costa and had there been an O/60’s category, we’d probably have won it. Well done to you all. Mens full results here - Steve H - Our positions are summarised here confirming the Men came 7th and the Ladies 6th.
Met League Race 2 Stevenage 10 November 2012
Whilst many were away at Sandy Balls - we still had a solid turnout at the Met League - ensuring that we did not slip too far down the table.

North West London YA League Race 1 Horsenden Hill 27 October 2012
A good turnout with some new faces competing well. Results are here.
North London XC Champs Horsenden Hill 27 October 2012
We didn’t win the North London Championship on Saturday but we did well. We were third behind Highgate and Serpentine and we were first Veteran team - a good result. Richard McCormick led the team home and our fifteen athletes competed to their best ability right through the field, battling against a cold, fierce wind. Positions here
We have to note that winners Highgate Harriers closed their team of six before we closed one - a reality check if ever there was one. But I think Barnet can narrow that gap by quite a bit over the next few years. Our Women did well too. Jo Kent was fifth finisher and first veteran. Barnet were first veteran team (Jo, Karen Murphy, Helen Hoyle).
This week the Team Managers’ pennant goes to Brian Fowler. Yes, you’re right, there was no Brian Fowler in the race, but there would have been no race at all without Barnet and District member Brian Fowler. Brian has organised the North London Championship for about a hundred years (it seems). He’s been a club member since the club was formed in 1966. So far as I can remember the last time he pulled on a Barnet vest was in the Chingford league relays in 2009. Thank you for a great Saturday afternoon Brian. Full race results here.
Metropolitan League Race 1 Claybury 20 October 2012
It was all black and white at the front as they came up the hill after the first lap - Shaftesbury and Highgate taking early charge. But our athletes were in there too. I counted Will, James and Jonney all through in the first hundred or so. Costa, Ben, Alex and Chris came through in the next hundred fighting hard. Danny was our eighth counter. Joe, John Clarke, David and John Murphy were further back, collecting points for Barnet’s ‘B’ team. When the final tally was in, with “8 in 200” we were first team in Division 3, just ahead of Highgate ‘B’. We are where we need to be at this stage - in a promotion position. Don’t dare relax for a moment! It’s where we are in March that counts. Next Metro race is 10 November at Stevenage.
It’s the “upside down” scoring system. If 300 runners finish, the first scores 300 points, the last scores 1 point, everyone else scores in between. In Division 3 the team’s score is the total score of the first eight finishers. There is one race but the teams are divided into three divisions. Our women’s team were second in Division 3 too. Full results are attached. Barnet positions are here - including a good run from Rufus Kent in the U13 Boys.
It was good to have John Murphy back after a long absence. It was good to welcome new member Jonney Yeates. .It was good to have Rob Scott, Clare Taylor, Ted Kimber, Jose Kimber and Steve Chilton giving strong support to our runners all round the course. - Photos courtesy of Rob Scott here
A team managers’ pennant goes this week to Costa Michael, rarely our first finisher but whose consistent, disciplined running, time after time, contributes so much to our team results.
Chingford League Race 2 Trent Park 13 October 2012
Saturday’s race was different from recent Chingford league races. Orion, who have been the leading club over the past five years, with Barnet generally second, had a fixture clash - an Essex Cross Country League race on the same date - and they came to Trent Park with a very weak team. We came second, just beaten by Woodford Green - not my estimate after the race, sorry to mislead you! The result of it all is that, after two races, we lead the A team and B team competitions (same points as Victoria Park but better race scores) and we lead the Veteran competition. In the A team competition we have five race points advantage over Orion with five races to go. Of course Orion will come back hard. We’ll fight them all the way! And we must keep in front of Victoria Park. Every position counts. Full results here and our results here Young Athlete results are here
Our women’s team came second too. They overtook Victoria Park to go top after two races (second veterans). Photos by Rob Scott are here
This week a team managers’ pennant goes to Ty Holden, our leading sprints coach, who ran five miles over mud and fields to help the cross country team. Well done Ty!
In addition to our 36 athletes who ran the five miles we had more than a dozen Barnet members out around the course cheering on the team - truly the Barnetonian spirit!
SEAA XC Relays 6 October 2012
Please find attached the results from Saturday's Relays. A BIG WELL DONE to all the young athletes that competed on what was a rather muddy course, it was great to see you all racing and congratulations to George Groom for the fastest time in the U13 Boys race, even if Athletics Weekly did not recognise this.
St Albans XC Relays 15 September 2012
Thanks for a great showing in the warm sunshine. The full results are here
A great run from Andy Cunningham, just pipping James Taylor for our fastest lap of the day. Must be the power of the red shorts (try it!) The B Team had a tussle with the A team eventually conceding by 1m29 sec - I trust it was good practice for Aldershot. Special mention for Tony Hamilton who, in true Terry Butcher fashion, kept going despite gashing his eye at the first corner. I hope you are healing well Tony.
Also to Dave Sheridan, who, having turned up to the Saturday morning training session in Trent Park, upon hearing that we were one man short of three complete teams, went back home again and ran a leg in the afternoon.
And thank you to Joe for assisting me with numbers etc. when I arrived late, despite my exhortations that you all arrive on time (do as I say - not as I do). John C
Herts & Middx YA Relays Hayes 9 September 2012
Please find attached the results from Sunday’s Relays. A BIG WELL DONE to all athletes that competed on what was probably the hottest and windiest day in September!!! We took home a lot of the Herts medals and showed that despite being a relatively small club we can still put up a fight against the big London Clubs!
Keep up the good work the cross country season is coming SOON!!! Jo K
