Winter 2011/12

Orion 15 XC - Epping Forest - 24 March 2012

A relatively small number of athletes - most training for the London Marathon - some persuaded to run by others taking part - had a sunny Saturday morning trot round an exceedingly dry Epping Forest. Did not stop the hills but at least the going under foot was firm for the majority of the 15 miles of pleasant woods and Essex countryside. Excellent runs from Alex and Richard in the men and Karen and Nicola in the ladies - with the Men and I believe the ladies gaining 2nd team. Full results here

Herts Vets XC Tewin 18 March 2012

A small number of our vets headed up to Tewin to take part in the Herts XC, albeit that the going was somewhat hard under foot. We had 2 winners Karen Murphy winning the V35 Women and Des Michael the V60 Men. Unfortunately we were unable to complete a team in any of the categories which is quite unusual for us.
V40 Men V60 Men V35 Women
11 Adrian Mason 43.20 1 Des Michael 28.00 1 Karen Murphy 27.54
12 Costa Michael 43.47 19 Tom Horne V70 45.52 15 Pauline Michael 33.30
45 Kerry Rochester 52.24 29 Clare Bouttle 38.07

Chingford League Relays Highams Park 17 March 2012

Chingford league relay results attached....a good turnout with 4 Mens teams, 1 Womens, 1 @ U15s and 3 @ U13s teams. The Barnet Senior Men had a convincing win over our own Vets team, who in fariness were missing some key runners...
The Vet men lost out to Orion Vets and have had to pass the trophy over to Orion after a 4 year reign. The Womens team were narrowly defeated (2 secs) by Eton Manor and in doing so Eton Manor claimed the overall Womens title.
On a positive note John Murphy, running last leg of the D team, had a storming run beating Richard McCormick by 1 second in a time of 10.42. The results organiser, Bob Jousiffe gave me a call in the evening to say John had in fact saved our Vets team and we had beaten Orion.
Unfortunately I had to put him straight, John had arrived on his bike an hour late thinking it was a 2.30pm start, Alex Horton had stepped in to run another leg to make the team up. Still a moment of glory for John.
Next season....must do better...we need to get back to winning as a team. Richard

North West London YA League Horsenden Hill 3 March 2012

National XC Champs Parliament Hill 25 February 2012

Some excellent performances all round in this main XC fixture of the year, with the 125th running of the National held at its traditional 'home'. The most outstanding run of the day in a Barnet vest has to go to U13 athlete George Groom who was a fantastic 12th against the best of his age in the UK, underlining the progress he has made this winter. Other good runs came from Jo Kent in the Womens race in 88th leading the ladies to 29th team and Alex Horton 294th in the Mens race out of over 1600 finishers with the Men coming 35th out of 125 teams. Our results are here ( please let me know if I have missed anyone).

Met League Race 5 Horsenden Hill Ealing 11 February 2012

Full results from the final race of the League are here. Well done to all who ran in this tough league this year - lets see if we can get a full team turn out to all the fixtures next year and put a challenge up to the GCR & Herts Phoenix's who seem to get a full squad most fixtures?

Chingford League Race 5 Epping Forest 21 January 2012

Conditions were not as bad as last year but it was certainly the muddiest race we have done this season. The womens team was somewhat decimated with only 4 Barnet runners however those who made it put in a good performance. The Women Senior team still lead overall but a good turnout is required at Victoria Park if they are to stay ahead of the pack.
The Senior Men A Team were 3rd and B Team 2nd however the Vet Men were first to move ahead of Orion Vets by 1 point in the overall standings.
Richard McCormick remains first Senior & Vet, Andy Cunningham 1st Supervet (V50) and Nicola Froud 1st Supervet (V45).
Jo Kent has a bit of work to do at Victoria Park if she is to get back on top of the Senior & Vet categories. Full results here
Next Fixture Victoria Park - February 18th - 5 mile Road (a little short) - please try and make it if you can.

Another good run by Alex by the looks on a cold but dry day.

Herts County XC Champs Fairlands Valley 8 January 2012

Some excellent results across the ages and throughout the day with the highlight being the Gold Team medal won by our U11 Girls team of Florence Ham (2nd place), Mia Groom (3rd place), Scarlett Kent (7th) and Annalisa Mack (20th). Both Mens and Ladies Senior teams did well to gain Silver medals, with the Men lead home by Alex Horton in 6th and the Ladies by Jo Kent in 5th. Both Alex, Jo and Karen Murphy all gained County selection. Well done to them. Individually there was also a fine 2nd place by George Groom in the U13 Boys. The U11 Boys team also competed well finishing a close 4th team and Charlotte Michael also ran well individually finishing 7th in the U17 Girls.
Full results of all the races are here

Met League Race 3 Ruislip 17 December 2011

Thanks to the encouragement from Alex Horton - the Senior Men had their best turn out in this League for some years and possibly ever - Alex also went on to have a fine run finishing an excellent 72nd which is no mean achievement given the standard of those around him. The next race is at Trent Park on 14 January, so there really is no excuse for us not to have a good turn-out again! Senior men and our places are here.

North West London XC League Race 3 Trent Park 3 December 2011

The first day to feel like a real cross country event. After a night of rain we were fortunate in the weather staying dry for our fixture. New faces helped give Barnet and District a good showing in this third event of the league. With two of the Castang triplets unwell Archie gave a spirited performance pinning his number on as his race was being called.
The Under 17 men fielded a good team. It would be great if the Under 17 women could field a team to build on the work done by Charlotte Michael.
Thank you to all the young athletes, and their families and friends who help them get to the meeting. Michael Martin - Results are here

Fraternity & Soriety Cups Trent Park 3 December 2011

If you hadn’t heard the good news, - it was a Barnet clean sweep in the Fraternity and Sorority Cup matches yesterday -with the ladies retaining their title.
The Fraternity cup’s engravings go back to 1978 and Barnet’s name is not on the it – so we’ll have to refer to the club archivists to find out when it was last won by the host club.
Full results for both matches are here and well done to all for this rare double!

Chingford League Race 4 Alexandra Palance 26 November 2011

A much more interesting race than usual in many team categories, with more clubs fielding strong teams. It would change the league dynamics significantly if Heathside regularly turned out in such force!
Barnet Women once again won both the Senior & Vets teams although Eton Manor and Trent Park were very close. Good win for the Men Vet team keeping Orion at bay, Seniors had to settle for 4th. Full results here.
We are now leading all the individual categories :
Jo Kent Senior & Vet Nicola Froud SuperVet
Richard McCormick Senior & Vet Andy Cunningham SuperVet

London XC Champs Parliament Hill 19 November 2011

Great turnout from our Mens and Ladies teams - and some very good performances - as individuals and as a team (look at the clubs that finished behind us). The ladies finished an excellent 5th overall, led home by Jo Kent in 16th place and Nicola not far behind. The men finished a commendable 8th,led home by Richard McCormick in 32nd with Alex closing in behind. We continue to be blessed by fine dry weather - how long can it last? Full results - here - including all YA races.
Best individual performance of the day though has to go to George Groom who finished 6th in U13 Boys for London Borough of Barnet.

Chingford League Race 3 Hogs Hill 1 November 2011

Once again convincing wins for the Womens A Team and Vets Team with Jo Kent first home for Barnet in 2nd place followed by Nicola Froud and Karen Murphy. The men were 2nd in all 3 categories , A & B and Vets Teams, with Orion taking the honours. Orion have acquired some new blood following the disbandment of Walthamstow AC and are proving tough to beat. Results here
The race was won by Paul Martelletti of VPH / New Zealand in 15.44 who used it as a training run following his recent 2.16.49
in the Berlin Marathon.
Next CL fixture is at Alexandra Palace Nov 26th which will be a joint fixture with the NWLL. Get some hill training in !!

Chingford League Race 2 Trent Park 15 October 2011

Well done to the Senior Women & Vet women, quality performances - although they are almost the same teams...
Despite an extra strong and large team the Senior Men could only manage 2nd to Orion and even worse the Vet Men 2nd by 1 point also to Orion.
It is quite simple what we need to do - RUN FASTER !!
See you at Hog Hill - November 1st.
Richard
In all we had 51 runners out - which was more then 25% of the total field and one of the best ever turn out's for a Cross Country event that I can recall ( We had 54 at the Stevenage MWRRL this summer) - Thanks to Sue for co-ordinating the numbers at the start. It was also great to see so many Barnet vests spread out around the field on the warm down, just need to find some more of that energy for the race. Full results are here and our individual results are here.
YA results are here - highlighting some excellent runs from with Alex 3rd in the U17 Boys, closely followed by Ben, Thomas & Oliver only 1 second apart in the U15 Boys in 7th and 8th and Rufus Kent a fine 5th in the U13 Boys.

Chingford League Race 1 Hogs Hill 4 October 2011

Good wins for Senior Women, Vet Men and Senior Men B team....remember it is 6 to score for each of the teams, if you are a Vet you score in both the Senior & Vets teams.
Senior Men A team were 2nd, only 11 points behind Orion, just need a couple more fast boys to sort them out ( Adrian, Costa, Grant, Ed ) Senior Women had a convincing win despite half the team being Vets. However in the Vet Women we only had 3 so need 3 more to make up the team.
