Barnet & District Athletic Club
Over 40 entered the senior race on a mild December day in sharp contrast to last year! A few did not finish and a couple were disqualified for starting too early (how did that happen!) The popular winner was Ann Stephenson who regularly trains with Maggie’s Saturday group and who was instrumental in organising the ladies’ Christmas get together at Brooklyns, Cockfosters. A deserved winner whose son runs for Shaftesbury; ”he’s never won a trophy like this!” she remarked. Click on photos to the right for the winner and her trophy!
Ever present on Boxing Day, Kim Henderson came 2nd with her triathlon star daughter Katherine 2nd fastest lady in 11th place. It was great to see Bob Taylor and Jim Cunningham complete the course in respectable times after injury and a group of James and Jo’s middle distance runners finishing in fast times, the best of the bunch being Tom Butler sporting his “lucky” shorts. Senior Results
In the youngsters race the surprise winner was Chinwe Iwunze who was given a favourable handicap on account of her being a talented 10yr old sprinter/jumper. Maybe she’ll become another Jessica Ennis? Aidan Parker beat Scarlett Kent in a fast , determined finish to come 2nd. The fastest finisher outside the top three was Analissa Mack in 7m 50secs. Our thanks go to Chris and Mel for organising the distribution of numbers and afterwards for calculating the results. Thanks again to Dave Wilson who is a Grade 1 timekeeper and comes from Hemel Hempstead to assist us every year.
Boxing Day wouldn’t be the same without the cakes and tea, so our thanks to Ginny and Bob Taylor and James’ fiancée, Clare for serving us, not forgetting Jose, Kirsty and Linda for organising the bumper raffle. Another of our Club’s wonderful traditions. Steve Harris

Garden City Xmas 5m Race Welwyn Garden City 4 December 2011
A chilly morning in Welwyn Garden saw a select band of runners out for a new event hosted by Garden City Runners. This was a well organised event with plenty of marshalls on a course which has historically seen some very quick times ( sub 23mins in the 1980's by some of the lead Kenyans of the time).

Poppy Run Trent Park 30 October 2011
I would like to thank all those who supported the Poppy Run yesterday. We totalled 114 entries in this first year. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and I congratulate everyone for doing an extremely good deed on this, the 90th year of the Royal British Legion.
There are some fantastic photos of you all on http://sportsnaps.com/ (NB: You don’t need race number to view photos)

Bexley Winter Race Walk League Race 1 5k Road 23 October 2011
Here's a result from the weekend - I still seem to be grinding out a bit of an improvement technically and am as fit as I have been for some time (body behaving well!) - probably training as hard as I ever have and getting away with it at present.

Club Road Senior Handicaps Victoria Park 16 October 2011
Not quite as many competitors as might have been desired for this event, one of the Club’s oldest competitions, taking place on its traditional date in October. Sarah Boxer was first home in a time just over a minute faster than her winning time last year. I believe this is the first time that anyone has won this event in consecutive years. A fast finishing Jerry Bryan in coming second, expressed his delight at , “at last getting a medal”. John Clarke put in a workman like performance to come third. Fastest on the day was the evergreen Dave Wilcock. - Results here
Thanks to Ted & José for officiating; the two Steves, Sandra and Tom for marshalling, Bob for providing the refreshments and Martyn for coordinating.

Club Road YA Handicaps Trent Park 15 October 2011
A lovely sunny, Saturday morning saw many a surprised face as the Clubs Young Athletes were informed that their usual Saturday Session was being substituted for the YA Club Road Handicap race. This was the second year that this annual race was held in its new format. Steve Harris lead the 38 strong field in a gentle and fun warm up before the serious business could begin. Mel’s organisational skills ensured that the competitors set off in the correct order in times allotted to them by the big bad handicapper; James Taylor!
Dexter Kelly put in a awesome and gutsy performance to lead the field home by a big margin with a relaxed looking Stephanie Allen, having time to smile as she crossed the finish line, in second place - this despite a hard battle to chase down those who set off in front of her. A surprised looking Inglian Hasani came home in third – however, there was no need to be taken aback as he should expect to reap the rewards from such a terrific effort. Sophie Parker had a fantastic run, posting the fastest girls time (and fourth fastest overall !)and a slick performance from Oliver Formby saw him post the fastest Boys time, some 29 seconds quicker than last year’s best time.
Well done to all who took part and to those who helped on the day. - Full results here

Garden City 10 Road Race Welwyn Garden City 25 September 2011
Unfortunately as the date for this race was moved back a couple of weeks it ended up clasing with the relays. As I understand it the idea was to see if by moving the date more entries would be received, but I believe numbers were down by 100. Our results are here
SEAA Masters Road Relays Aldershot 25 September 2011
3 reasonably strong teams made their way to Aldershot for the relays and it was the V60's who came back with a bronze medal, with our V50's just getting pipped and having to settle for 4th. Good runs all round. Special mentions to Tim Butler, recruited only the day before & to Nick Bingham who just got back from Greece late the night before & was reserve until Sat a.m.

Fairlands Valley 5k Road Race 3 1 September 2011
Results and some of the overall positions from Race 3 are here. Looks as if Alex did an excellent job of pacing our leading ladies - all of whom had faster times then previous races and led the team to 1st place on the night in both Seniors and Vets and Overall 2nd in both categories, with Kath March 3rd and Karen Murphy 4th Overall and 1st V35.

Worstead 5m 29 July 2011
Another trip to Norfolk and another race, this one was a fast, certified course one lap around the lanes of Worsted – famous for its weavers and church, which was built as a result of the success and subsequent wealth of the cloth trade. The race was followed by a free music and beer festival after the prize giving, although after 20 minutes we gave up on the queue for food – next time we will take our own! There is a nice pub “The White Lady”. The festival continued over the rest of the weekend.

Well done to all those who ran last night, brilliant result - Men 3rd, Ladies 4th, overall 3rd, Both Vet teams 1st.
Overall after 4 races we finished 3rd, our target for the season, so we stay in Div 1 next year. Overall our Lady vets were a very dominant 1st & Men Vets a very close 2nd to GCR. Our results are here
Well done to all those who ran or helped with team managaement over the season. I think we can be proud of our performance. Maureen & Dave

Our men finished 3rd, ladies 4th making us overall 3rd after 3 races, on the same points as FVS & N Herts only 2 points behind.

Unfortunately we didn't have such a good turnout as at the 1st race as a number of athletes were down with illness or injury, especially in the ladies team.
Men 4th Team, Ladies 6th, Overall 5th.
After 2 races we are now overall in 4th position - so need a really good turnout at the next race on Tues 7th June at WGC

MWRRL Race 1 Stevenage 5 May 2011
An excellent turn out on a pleasant evening - 36 men and 18 ladies - 54 members in all - saw us complete 3 Mens team's and 2 Ladies - even if some of us were somewhat late in arriving... As impressive was the fact that some 333 runners completed the race from the 6 clubs, highlighting the success of this league. I am sure that Maureen & Dave were delighted with our overall 3rd position - a solid performance on return to Division 1, and our Lady Vets winning - with Jo Kent 2nd overall lady and 1st Vet the standout performance. There is no room for complacency and we do need to keep the turnout high for the remaining fixtures - with the next coming up on Wednesday 18th May in Bishops Stortford. - Full results are at this link
Keswick Half Marathon 1st May 2011
31st Will Morris 1:29:52.
Its a really scenic race, a loop around the Newlands Valley before following the road alongside Derwentwater back into Keswick. Aside from great views the course offered some very challenging hills, with one at 6 miles up the side of Cat Bells being particulary painful - It might not match the Coniston 14 for difficulty but there can be few half marathons this tough - even the 'flat' bits seemed pretty bumpy! Would definitely recommend this one for next year. Will M.
Downham Market 30k Walk 17 April 2011
I travelled to Downham Market on London Marathon day (at Stevenage station at 7am most of the athletes were heading in the opposite direction!) to compete in a new event round this quiet (but not flat) Norfolk town. The idea was to do a tempo walk at fast training pace which meant that I went sensibly early on and got a lovely rhythm going. Net result a PB - I've not previously done a 30k where I haven't blown up horribly. Having walked all the way with Redcar's Martin Fisher (who was under a minute behind me in the National 50k last year) we agreed to walk in together rather than sprint it out.

London Marathon 17 April 2011
A great day out - the weather was perfect - perhaps a bit too hot at the end - but generally good, the crowds were very enthusiastic. Well done to Mike Walker for being first home & getting his pacing exactly right and a huge 10 minute PB as a result. Many thanks from us all who ran, to those who cheered on round the course and for the friendly welcome at the Barnet baggage lorries - especially John Shirley - and his chairs in the shade - much appreciated by all. Our results as per the official site are attached - if anyone else ran, please let me know and I will add you on. Adrian .
Southern 6 & 12 Stage Relays Milton Keynes 27 March 2011
A big thanks to the 2 team managers Des & Steve for encouraging a good turn out ( and nearly 2 ladies teams). An excellent team performance by the Ladies A team saw them home in a fantastic13th position. The men faired less well - but resilience saw them climb to 27th by the end. Good support was received around the course from and it was also great to see former member Richard Pownall (now with Milton Keynes) out marshalling & running a later leg. Lugano Trophy Veterans Walk Switzerland 20 March 2011
Steve Allen was in Switzerland at the Lugano Trophy - the main 20k events were dominated by the Chinese (1-2-3 in the men's and 1-3 in the women's). 30 men under 90 minutes demonstrated the strength of the fields. I will do a bit for the magazine but here are the bare bones:
(5 x 2k laps beside Lake Lugano in the Spring sunshine)
7 Steve Allen 54:49.9 (2nd M50) behind 2 Germans, a Croatian, a Swiss, an Italian and Viktor Ginkgo from Belarus 30 started, 25 finished
Just outside my PB (54:37) but the wonders of chip timing reveal how ridiculously conservatively I walked - the first 9ks were all in the range 5:27.5 to 5:32.1 (the fastest being the 9th) and I then sped up to 5:22.6 in the last. I must be more aggressive in Slovakia next week at 20k and hopefully go through halfway in sub 57 mins and see what happens!

My next two serious races are in the Grand Prix meetings in Lugano (Switzerland) on 20th March - in the 10k Masters invitation which has it's usual strong field - and then Dudince (Slovakia) on 26th when I race in the supporting 20k to the main 50k event.
