Barnet & District Athletic Club
An excellent turn out with some 62 seniors and 9 youngsters braving a fresh Boxing Day morning and some icy paths.
The first 10 from the senior race are as follows - with the full results attached via the link below - I understand that there was a regrettable error on the day and that the fastest lady was in fact Hannah Sheridan.

On a fabulous day for picnicing, sunbathing and even a little racing, Barnet’s Vet men made an excellent showing in all age groups. A very strong 40’s squad went in with high expectations and their 7th placing shows just how competitive this event can be. Richard ran a super 1st Leg to come home just a few seconds behind the leader. Liam was over from Spain to bring the 60’s home to a very creditable 6th place and our “Flying 50’s” kept up their run of medal winning, ‘Barnet-on-Tour’ performances, with Dave allowing himself the luxury of being disappointed with his time, albeit our fastest.
Classic image of the day was the sight of Pete Ellis coming down the slope onto the finishing square around the flat Arena. He was overtaken by Woodford’s Dave Cox (a very high standard runner) and when Pete glanced down to see Cox’s number and realised he was in the same age group, mouthed a tirade of expletives before gritting his teeth, gurding his loins and set off to reek revenge for this affront. Within 50 metres Pete regained his position and held on to the line. I’m convinced that last 700mts was run on performance enhancing adrenalin.
On a mountainous, beast of a course, I was pleased with my time of 63:09 if a little disappointed that they changed the age categories from 5 to 10 years the night before the race. That left me 3rd M50 instead of 1st M55, at the age of 59½. Our Herts Police Vet’s were 3rd, plus we had 3rd M40 & 3rd W45. All were agreed the 4 “killer” hills made it worth between 2-2½ mins for a decent standard runner. Reg Black came down from Southport to support & we enjoyed a pre-race walk & cappuccino & some of his Karaoke warbling in the evening.

A great day for Barnet. Excellent runs from everybody in the team saw Barnet win the silver medals against very strong opposition in this National Championship. Their total time of 1h.43m.31s. was a huge 69 seconds better than last when the team finished 4th and I understand that they recorded a faster time than last years winners! The day was to say the least, blustery but fortunately the showers stayed away until the race had finished. It was good to see Reg Black who had travelled from Southport to support.
