Chingford League Race 5 Epping Forest 21 January 2012
Conditions were not as bad as last year but it was certainly the muddiest race we have done this season. The womens team was somewhat decimated with only 4 Barnet runners however those who made it put in a good performance. The Women Senior team still lead overall but a good turnout is required at Victoria Park if they are to stay ahead of the pack.
The Senior Men A Team were 3rd and B Team 2nd however the Vet Men were first to move ahead of Orion Vets by 1 point in the overall standings.
Richard McCormick remains first Senior & Vet, Andy Cunningham 1st Supervet (V50) and Nicola Froud 1st Supervet (V45).
Jo Kent has a bit of work to do at Victoria Park if she is to get back on top of the Senior & Vet categories. Full results here

Hertfordshire XC Champs Fairlands Valley 8 January 2012
Some excellent results across the ages and throughout the day with the highlight being the Gold Team medal won by our U11 Girls team of Florence Ham (2nd place), Mia Groom (3rd place), Scarlett Kent (7th) and Annalisa Mack (20th). Both Mens and Ladies Senior teams did well to gain Silver medals, with the Men lead home by Alex Horton in 6th and the Ladies by Jo Kent in 5th. Both Alex, Jo and Karen Murphy all gained County selection. Well done to them. Individually there was also a fine 2nd place by George Groom in the U13 Boys. The U11 Boys team also competed well finishing a close 4th team and Charlotte Michael also ran well individually finishing 7th in the U17 Girls.

Thanks to the encouragement from Alex Horton - the Senior Men had their best turn out in this League for some years and possibly ever - Alex also went on to have a fine run finishing an excellent 72nd which is no mean achievement given the standard of those around him. The next race is at Trent Park on 14 January, so there really is no excuse for us not to have a good turn-out again! Senior men and our places are here.
Boxing Day Handicaps Club House 26 December 2011
Over 40 entered the senior race on a mild December day in sharp contrast to last year! A few did not finish and a couple were disqualified for starting too early (how did that happen!) The popular winner was Ann Stephenson who regularly trains with Maggie’s Saturday group and who was instrumental in organising the ladies’ Christmas get together at Brooklyns, Cockfosters. A deserved winner whose son runs for Shaftesbury; ”he’s never won a trophy like this!” she remarked. Click on photos to the right for the winner and her trophy!
Ever present on Boxing Day, Kim Henderson came 2nd with her triathlon star daughter Katherine 2nd fastest lady in 11th place. It was great to see Bob Taylor and Jim Cunningham complete the course in respectable times after injury and a group of James and Jo’s middle distance runners finishing in fast times, the best of the bunch being Tom Butler sporting his “lucky” shorts. Senior Results
In the youngsters race the surprise winner was Chinwe Iwunze who was given a favourable handicap on account of her being a talented 10yr old sprinter/jumper. Maybe she’ll become another Jessica Ennis? Aidan Parker beat Scarlett Kent in a fast , determined finish to come 2nd. The fastest finisher outside the top three was Analissa Mack in 7m 50secs. Junior Results
Our thanks go to Chris and Mel for organising the distribution of numbers and afterwards for calculating the results. Thanks again to Dave Wilson who is a Grade 1 timekeeper and comes from Hemel Hempstead to assist us every year.
Boxing Day wouldn’t be the same without the cakes and tea, so our thanks to Ginny and Bob Taylor and James’ fiancée, Clare for serving us, not forgetting Jose, Kirsty and Linda for organising the bumper raffle. Another of our Club’s wonderful traditions. Steve Harris

Cheers, Will
A chilly morning in Welwyn Garden saw a select band of runners out for a new event hosted by Garden City Runners. This was a well organised event with plenty of marshalls on a course which has historically seen some very quick times ( sub 23mins in the 1980's by some of the lead Kenyans of the time).

North West London YA League Trent Park 3 December 2011
The first day to feel like a real cross country event. After a night of rain we were fortunate in the weather staying dry for our fixture. New faces helped give Barnet and District a good showing in this third event of the league. With two of the Castang triplets unwell Archie gave a spirited performance pinning his number on as his race was being called.
The Under 17 men fielded a good team. It would be great if the Under 17 women could field a team to build on the work done by Charlotte Michael.
Thank you to all the young athletes, and their families and friends who help them get to the meeting. Michael Martin - Results are here
Fraternity Cup and Soreity Cup Trent Park 3 December 2011
If you hadn’t heard the good news, - it was a Barnet clean sweep in the Fraternity and Sorority Cup matches yesterday -with the ladies retaining their title.
The Fraternity cup’s engravings go back to 1978 and Barnet’s name is not on the it – so we’ll have to refer to the club archivists to find out when it was last won by the host club.
Full results for both matches are here and well done to all for this rare double!

A much more interesting race than usual in many team categories, with more clubs fielding strong teams. It would change the league dynamics significantly if Heathside regularly turned out in such force!
Barnet Women once again won both the Senior & Vets teams although Eton Manor and Trent Park were very close. Good win for the Men Vet team keeping Orion at bay, Seniors had to settle for 4th. Full results here.

Great turnout from our Mens and Ladies teams - and some very good performances - as individuals and as a team (look at the clubs that finished behind us). The ladies finished an excellent 5th overall, led home by Jo Kent in 16th place and Nicola not far behind. The men finished a commendable 8th,led home by Richard McCormick in 32nd with Alex closing in behind. We continue to be blessed by fine dry weather - how long can it last? Once again convincing wins for the Womens A Team and Vets Team with Jo Kent first home for Barnet in 2nd place followed by Nicola Froud and Karen Murphy. The men were 2nd in all 3 categories , A & B and Vets Teams, with Orion taking the honours. Orion have acquired some new blood following the disbandment of Walthamstow AC and are proving tough to beat. Results here

Club Road Handicaps Seniors Victoria Park 16 October 2011
Not quite as many competitors as might have been desired for this event, one of the Club’s oldest competitions, taking place on its traditional date in October. Sarah Boxer was first home in a time just over a minute faster than her winning time last year. I believe this is the first time that anyone has won this event in consecutive years. A fast finishing Jerry Bryan in coming second, expressed his delight at , “at last getting a medal”. John Clarke put in a workman like performance to come third. Fastest on the day was the evergreen Dave Wilcock. - Results here

Chingford League Race 2 Trent Park 15 October 2011
Well done to the Senior Women & Vet women, quality performances - although they are almost the same teams...
Despite an extra strong and large team the Senior Men could only manage 2nd to Orion and even worse the Vet Men 2nd by 1 point also to Orion.
It is quite simple what we need to do - RUN FASTER !!
See you at Hog Hill - November 1st.
Richard
In all we had 51 runners out - which was more then 25% of the total field and one of the best ever turn out's for a Cross Country event that I can recall ( We had 54 at the Stevenage MWRRL this summer) - Thanks to Sue for co-ordinating the numbers at the start. It was also great to see so many Barnet vests spread out around the field on the warm down, just need to find some more of that energy for the race. Full results are here and our individual results are here.
YA results are here - highlighting some excellent runs from with Alex 3rd in the U17 Boys, closely followed by Ben, Thomas & Oliver only 1 second apart in the U15 Boys in 7th and 8th and Rufus Kent a fine 5th in the U13 Boys.
Club Road Handicaps Young Athletes Trent Park15 October 2011
A lovely sunny, Saturday morning saw many a surprised face as the Clubs Young Athletes were informed that their usual Saturday Session was being substituted for the YA Club Road Handicap race. This was the second year that this annual race was held in its new format. Steve Harris lead the 38 strong field in a gentle and fun warm up before the serious business could begin. Mel’s organisational skills ensured that the competitors set off in the correct order in times allotted to them by the big bad handicapper; James Taylor!
Dexter Kelly put in a awesome and gutsy performance to lead the field home by a big margin with a relaxed looking Stephanie Allen, having time to smile as she crossed the finish line, in second place - this despite a hard battle to chase down those who set off in front of her. A surprised looking Inglian Hasani came home in third – however, there was no need to be taken aback as he should expect to reap the rewards from such a terrific effort. Sophie Parker had a fantastic run, posting the fastest girls time (and fourth fastest overall !)and a slick performance from Oliver Formby saw him post the fastest Boys time, some 29 seconds quicker than last year’s best time.
Well done to all who took part and to those who helped on the day. - Full results here

Good wins for Senior Women, Vet Men and Senior Men B team....remember it is 6 to score for each of the teams, if you are a Vet you score in both the Senior & Vets teams.
Senior Men A team were 2nd, only 11 points behind Orion, just need a couple more fast boys to sort them out ( Adrian, Costa, Grant, Ed ) Senior Women had a convincing win despite half the team being Vets. However in the Vet Women we only had 3 so need 3 more to make up the team.

St Albans Cross Country Relays 17 September 2011
Yes the winter season has arrived. Usually this is a blast round a completely dry course on a warm Indian summers afternoon. This year it was mild and after the earlier rain there was already mud in a couple of sections. In the past this used to be a really well attended event with teams from across North London and the Home Counties, but numbers were well down this year and speaking to the organiser I know that Herts Phoenix were disappointed in this. Not withstanding this our ladies competed well to be 2nd with an excellent first leg from Nicola. Our men also had 2 teams and a great run from Michael Martin saw him grab our fastest time.
