SCVAC Meetg 3 Lee Valley 10 June 2013
Inspired by stand in Team Manager Steve Harris, the Vet Men joined the Vet Ladies in winning at this the 3rd vets meeting of the year, and at the same time and by 1 more scored point (thanks to Des for standing in at the very last minute in the V50 400m for the injured Ty) move to the top of the overall standings despite being on equal match points, again alongside our Vet Ladies team. Well done to all who took part tonight and I am sure Dave will be looking for a strong finish at the final meeting at Hemel in a few weeks time to ensure that both teams make it to the finals in Ashford later in the summer. St Albans Half Marathon 9 June 2013
Three of Maggie's ladies ran the St Albans Half Marathon, plus Tony Hamilton. Lisa Wilson - chip time 2:13:57 and Lynne Morris - 2:13:44. I ran with Tony and we both did 1:58:00 which was a PB for me (Ros de la Bertauche)
MWRRL Race 2 Royston 4 June 2013
Another reasonable turnout with 13 ladies & 29 men, this time the weather was warmer but with a strong wind & due to road works there was a diversion making the course long - circa 6.6m. Jonney led the team home in 7th place with Alex not far behind in 9th (good to have Seniors not Vets leading the team). We had a strong ladies team with Jo, Maggie & Nicola all finishing in the top10. Well done to all our runners wherever they finished – you are all part of the team. Thanks to John Fulcher & Mel Davies for helping David at the finish. Unfortunately there are some problems with the results & some times are not correct, hopefully this will be sorted soon.
Men finished 4th Team, Ladies 2nd, Male Vets 3rd & Lady Vets a great 1st. Overall we are still in 4th position, But it is very close between 2nd – 4th teams. We had some good individual results:- Des Michael & Nick Bingham were 1st & 2nd MV60, Jo Kent, Maggie Cooper, & Nicola Froud 1st, 2nd & 3rd FV45 (Karen M 4th FV45)
Maureen Shirley was 1st FV65 - Full results are here and at the MWRRL website

BUPA London 10k Road Race 27 May 2013
A mild dry sunny morning in London, ideal conditions for a good run so you would think - aside from the strong breeze off the Thames. All had promised that they had not gone too hard at the first MWRRL the previous Thursday - but most still missed their target times, some by more then others! Still a PB for Jonny Yeates, and a 2nd best ever for Will, with Richard 5th V45 & Jo K 7th W45. Also some good runs from some of Maggies group. If I have missed anyone please let me know! Team positions Men 35th of 100 teams (or 34th including Will) and the Ladies an excellent 22nd of 69 teams. Individual placings and times are as follows:
149 Will Morris 34.50, 159 Richard McCormick 35.02, 182 Adrian Mason 35.27, 189 Jonny Yeates 35.38, 210 Alex Horton 35.55, 248 Raj Patel 36.34, 323 James Taylor 37.36, 1116 Rob Prater 44.24

And as third scorer in the M50 team with Francisco Reis and Steve Uttley I picked up team golds in both races - both by considerable margins. Indeed we would have won all categories other than M35 in both races - and I have to meet my two team mates week in and week out in local races including our Vets League Division (both Ilford athletes)! That's 5 consecutive golds in major masters championships - World and European - lucky I have such fast colleagues as only once have I not been the final scorer.
I went for broke in the 30k and with the Czech Joseph Kalat chased in vain the man in bronze medal position (Willie Gaube of Germany). We both paid the price late on, me especially as my 15k splits of 1:28:58 and 1:40.17 testify (!!), with Steve Uttley passing us to take 4th having secured a bronze in the 10k and pacing himself much better here. I just held on to 6th with the following group (an Italian and another two Germans) closing fast (and a narrow PB).
I had trained for a hot day in central Europe! Indeed in Dudince (Slovakia) where I had watched the European Cup Walks a week earlier it had been 28C. Here it was 6C, very cold and wet.

We had a reasonable turnout for last night's race at Welwyn, not the most pleasant conditions, especially the heavy rain as we were waiting to start. We had 13 ladies & 31 men running & made a steady start to the season. In all 385 runners finished which was an excellent turn out. Full Results are here.
Men finished 4th, Ladies 5th, Mvets a splendid 1st & Lvets 5th Overall we are in 4th position, which means we need our strongest possible team out at Royston on Tues 4th June. We had some good individual results:- Des Michael & Nick Bingham were 1st & 2nd MV60, Richard McCormick was 2nd MV40, Dave Wilcock was 3rd MV50, Nicola Froud & Karen Murphy were 1st & 3rd FV45, Maureen Shirley was 1st FV65.

Southern Athletics League Match2 Ipswich 18 May 2013
It was a dark day for the Barnet & District Southern League Team, with only one woman (Sue) making up the womens team resulting in a lowly 4th place with 59.5 points.

The men tried their best with some great performances, even more impressive the below were competing for the first time in their respective events :
Kalam Abdul Quarnain 400H 64.5 Kalam Abdul Quarnain 110H 21.5 Mark Cunningham 400H 78.8 Eric Nyangezi Pole Vault 2.20
Mark Cunningham, a seasoned pole vaulter, well he has done one previous competition, claimed an U17 record with his 2.40 jump.
Individual reults at : http://www.southernathletics.org.uk/2013_division2n.html (sorry Mark they have me down as 400h b string and also note that Eric N ran the 400m A string - a bit much to ask Kalem to do both) We have slumped to the bottom of Division 2 North....there is only one way to go from here...yes upwards (not relegation!). Next match is much closer to home - Luton June 15th...lets have a big turnout.

UK National 10m Walk Champs Victoria Park 10 March 2013
I managed to finish 8th in the UK 10 mile championship at Victoria Park yesterday - another poor entry for a national event with our top two 20k walkers opting for Lugano next weekend although Dan and Dom King who are competing there also, but under their own steam having failed to get selected for the GB team, did appear, to finish second and third behind Irishman Michael Doyle. I got outsprinted for 6th and 7th by Chris Hobbs and Steve Arnold - but I would point out that they had not raced 75 minues earlier in the BMAF indoor championships! Yes, our national bodies had managed to schedule the 2 races on the same day despite the fact that over 80% of the UK field were likely to be veterans. Ian Richards, the M60 winner at Lee Valley also attempted the double but failed to make the start in time (Local Knowledge 1 SATNAV 0) whilst my fellow UK 50k champion in 2012, Maureen Noel, did make it as our passenger but then got Disqualified at Victoria Park.
I was pleased to get within a minute of my PB in the 10 miles (it's not a great PB it must be said) despite the earlier race and the extreme cold. Endurance is definitely going better than speed at the minute but then my training is entirely geared at present to making a good fist of defending my UK 50k title in Coventry in July.

Four Barnet runners competed in the Middlesex Masters XC Championsips excellently hosted once again by Hillingdon AC.It's a lovely low-key event with an end-of-term feeling, and is usually our last cross country of the winter. This year there was plenty of mud, as well as the two long hills which are each climbed three times. There was one race for all age groups, men and women combined. Our best individual performance was by Mike Stapleton who finished 11th. overall (5th M50), and who would probably have finished a few places higher if he hadn't got stomach cramp or stitch in the last mile - probably through eating a banana less than one hour before the start. He's still young and will learn from the experience. Our M50 team were 4th. Barnet results :-11th. Mike Stapleton 31.50; 23rd. Michael Martin 34.09; 47th. Pete Ellis 36.44; 69th. John Clarke 39.14 (4th. M60) 104 (men and women) finished. Full results attached John C

Chingford League Relays Highams Park 2 March 2013
In second place in the league, with sizeable gaps to first and third, there was little at stake on Saturday. Nevertheless, there were some things to note. It was good to see Yitzac and Alex back in the team after some time away - but I’m afraid you’ll both have to wait till October for your next winter season race. Our team selection on the day proved just right all the way through the four teams. When did this last happen? Selection was by John Clarke after lengthy consultation with athletes. Clearly, this is the way to do it.
Andy Cunningham was our fastest by a whisker as we finished 3rd team behind Trent Park and Orion. Trent Park, only fourth in the league, surprised us with this win. A marker for next season? Maybe, but they’ll have to do it over seven races, not just one. Our B team was first B team and our veterans (Richard, Costa, Andy C and Andy K) were first veterans. Each club’s fastest four veterans, in whichever team, scored as the club’s veteran team.
Our final league positions, after seven races, are as follows: A team, 2nd; B team, 2nd; Veterans, 1st. It’s a good result and we deserve it - achieved by solid, consistent efforts in seven races across the winter season. We turned out in the cold and snow when others didn’t. Full results are attached, our results are here.
Barnet’s Women were 3rd and 3rd veterans.
The team managers’ pennant this week goes to James Taylor who has run in most of our races this winter season and ran another good race on Saturday. Well done James.

National XC Champs Sunderland 23 February 2013
In the end only a small contingent of Barnet athletes made their way North to take part in the major XC Race of the year. Conditions were very difficult and beneath approx. 3 inches of snow it was very muddy. Snowing and very cold early on. Ceased snowing and very marginally warmer later. Despite these challenging conditions there was a remarkable run from George Groom to finish 4th in the U13 Boys race - an outstanding achievement and only 17 seconds behind the winner. Full results of all races are here
Under 13 Girls: Mia Groom - A very creditable 136th out of 264 runners in a time of 14:01
Under 13 Boys: George Groom - A superb 4th out of 205 runners in a time of 11:24 only 17 sec behind the winner from Tonbridge

It was undoubtedly one of the muddiest Southerns ever. Probably not the worst - but not far off. Even the team tent seemed to be parked in a sea of mud. There were a number of excellent runs throughout the day - Finn Harvey's 75th in the U13 Boys despite being an U11 was exceptional, and there was a really good run from Thomas Butler, 35th in the U15 Boys. Good to see that we did also finish a team in the U13 Boys. Well done all. In the Senior Ladiies Karen Murphey led the team home in 75th and with close packing from Karen Bradley, Helen Hoyle and Kath Henderson saw them finish an excellent 12th. The Senior Men also went for close packing, and indeed at the end of the first lap there was a procession of the 6 scoring Barnet men all within a few places of each other. Alex Horton had a much improved run and led the way in 128th, and with the team in by 209th, saw them finish 11th, their best position for many years, helped by the fact that only 31 teams closed, compared to the 70 to 80 that is normally the case.Full results are here John Clarke's Race report is here and photos are here
Metropolitan League Race 5 Northwood 9 February 2013
It was time to do or die. Our team went to the start line with a job to do. In this final Metro league race we must hold second place in Division 3 to win promotion. Every member of the team played their part and we did just that. We are in Division 2 next season. It was a new course in the grounds of Merchant Taylors’ School at Northwood. Course notes promised “superbly maintained playing fields, stream crossing, lakeside path”. Very nice, and what’s more, we had our new red shorts bearing the Barnet club logo. Will Morris ran a great race to lead the team home in 58th place. Alex Horton was 100, Raj Patel was 101 and Costa Michael was not far behind at 110. It was eight to score and we finished 8 in 224. We thought this would be enough but we didn’t know. Saturday night would be an anxious time. The results were on the league website just before midnight and it was good news. We had held second place to win promotion. Full Results here & Barnet Men positions here. There is a veteran competition too. We finished first team in Division 3 and win promotion to Division 2. The senior and veteran competitions are quite separate. A club’s senior team can be in Division 1 and it’s veteran team can be in Division 3. Veterans score normally as seniors in the senior competition. Barnet women’s team is also promoted from Division 3 to Division 2 and the veteran team, too is promoted from Division 3 to Division 2, led home on this occassion by Karen Murphy in 37th supported by Phillipa Horton in 100th.
